An ideal electric scooter offers an affordable and reliable solution especially if your daily commutes involve public transport- buses, trains, and trams.
But is the electric scooter easy and convenient?
That’s why you need a foldable electric scooter, better to be a lightweight folding e-scooter.
In this post, I am going to share with you the best folding electric scooter including lightweight and compact ones that you can buy in 2021!
Table of Contents
Why is The Foldable Electric Scooter a Wise Choice
A quick question,
Are foldable electric scooters making our life easier?
Absolutely yes, and here’s why:
No more trouble looking for a parking lot
The market is full of electric scooters that make it a breeze to cover short commutes without having to use your car.
Credit to their compact size, these don’t require you to hassle for a parking lot for hours on end. When you are not riding it, simply fold it and store it pretty much anywhere.
Compact
The compact design of a foldable electric scooter is what makes it a perfect last-mile solution.
You can ride it to the bus station or use it to catch a tram or train and later use it to hit the remaining part of the road to your workplace.
Environmentally friendly
Unlike diesel and petrol engine cars that combust fuel to produce energy alongside a lot of smoke and noise, an electric adult lightweight scooter is powered by a motor (or 2) and a chain or belt.
This way, you are assured of noiseless rides with almost zero carbon footprint.
Saves a lot of time
Time is quintessentially scarce to waste even a single minute stuck in traffic jams, gas stations, and parking lots today.
Unfortunately, that’s the order of the day more so in busy cities. But that’s where the best electric folding scooters 2019 come in.
These personal transport vehicles are compact and swift and can easily allow you to short-cut your way through shopping malls, parking lots, and subways thereby saving you a lot of time.
You only need to make sure that it is charged and you are good to go!
They are fun
Let’s face it: riding the Razor scooter throughout summer was a whole lot of fun back in the day.
Riding on an electric scooter for adults brings back the exact feeling you had doing tricks around the block when you were a kid.
But it’s much fun now since the modern scooter is self-powered and has lots of other cool features.
1. Glion Dolly Foldable Adult Electric Scooter- Top Lightweight Folding Electric Scooter for Value
• Motor: 250W
• Range: 15 miles
• Battery: 36v 7.8Ah Lithium-Ion
• Charging time: 3-4 hours
• Maximum speed: 15 mph
• Weight: 28 pounds
• Max weight: 250 lbs
• Wheels: 8.5’’ with honeycomb interior
• Brake system: E-anti-lock rear brake
• Dimensions: 37.4 x 7.9 x 11.8 in
• Additional features: patented vertical self-standing and dolly design, pedestrian bell
The Glion Dolly falls at the middle range in terms of power and pricing and could make a great choice if you are looking for the last mile scooter.
It uses a 250-watt motor powered by a 36-volt Li-ion battery to offer you speeds of up to 15 mph and a range of up to 15 miles.
The key selling feature of the Glion Dolly is its portability. This scooter measures 36 x 16 x 8 inches when folded, and it’s also very lightweight at 28 pounds.
The Glion has 2 small wheels at the back that make it possible to pull it behind you when walking through malls and parking lots without it falling from side to side.
It can also stand upright on its own when folded. So, you can take it into the office, class, and even on buses and trains.
But I’m heavy at 175 pounds while the Glion is meant to carry weights of up to 250 pounds.
On flat terrains, though, the speed and range were as advertised and the rear brake is amazingly strong for emergency stops.
In addition, and to make up for its relatively shorter range, this scooter charges fully in the utmost 4 hours.
There are a few drawbacks albeit not deal breakers, though.
First, its 8.5-inch wheels aren’t air-filled and there isn’t a suspension system. Thus, you’ll really want to avoid deep potholes, rugged alleys, and big dips.
Secondly, this scooter doesn’t have a speedometer unless you download and pair it with a compatible Bluetooth App.
- √Balance between affordability, speed, and range
- √Lightweight
- √Handlebar has adjustable heights
- √Recharges faster
- √Incredible portability
- ⊗No suspension system
- ⊗No speedometer
2. Xiaomi Mijia M365– Best Affordable Electric Scooter for Range
• Max Speed: 15.5 mph
• Battery: 36V 7.8Ah lithium battery
• Brake System: Front E-ABS braking system, Rear mechanical disk brake
• Weight: 26.9 lbs
• Wheels: 8.5 inches front and rear pneumatic tires
• Range: 18.6 miles
• Charging Time: 0%-100% 5.5 hours
• Motor: 250W front brushless motor (500w peak)
• Light: Front and Rear
The Xiaomi Mijia M365 is a relatively affordable scooter that is currently all over the streets because of its 15.5 MPH maximum speed performance and an incredible range of 18.6 miles per charge.
At 26.9 pounds, the Xiaomi Mijia M365 is among the lightest scooters in these reviews. This weight coupled with its folding function means that you can easily lug it around should the battery run out of juice.
This scooter uses a 250w (500w peak) front motor- and what’s so interesting is that this motor is brushless. This means that issues of wear and tear as well as overheating are significantly reduced.
So, you should expect quite a good number of years of exciting and fun rides from this bike with good care.
The Xiaomi is powered by a 36v 7.8Ah lithium battery that charges fully from empty in around 5.5 hours. Its 220 pounds and dimensions, 42.5×16.9×44.9 inches, mean that it’s ideally meant for adults although big kids could also ride on too.
There are 3-speed modes that determine how fast you accelerate as well as the range you get from the battery.
If you’ll be relying on this ride for your daily short commute to work, there is an eco-mode to save on power while offering you a speed of up to 11 mph- which isn’t bad in my opinion.
The dual-wheel braking system is great and the fact that it can halt the scooter in the utmost 4 meters is an assurance of safety for me.
The front wheel uses e-ABS (electronic Anti-lock Braking system) to prevent the wheel from locking and it also recovers and regenerates energy to boost battery life. The rear wheel, on the other hand, uses the most coveted disk braking technology.
Other safety features on the Xiaomi Mijia M365 include a very powerful and bright 1.1W LED headlight with a focusing lens, and a bright LED tailgate light that flashes distinctly once you apply the brakes.
Riding experience
Right out of the box, my first impression was that the Xiaomi M365 has impressive quality, especially for the price.
Assembling it was easy and I also managed to pair it up with the app after several trials (Hint: I had to change my location to Mainland China first to make it work. You could try that too).
It felt really sturdy riding on this scooter and its 8.5-inch pneumatic tires made the rides quite smooth. I had to be very careful with large potholes, though, because Xiaomi does not have a suspension system.
The handlebars felt impressively sturdy and are anti-slip. The accelerator responds smoothly each time and I felt very safe cruising at 12 mph.
What I like
- Very easy to assemble– this scooter comes almost pre-assembled. The only assembling that you need to do is attach the screw the handlebars to the main unit.
- Smooth rides– the 8.5-inch pneumatic wheels are a really good balance between speed and ability to go uphill. The dual-brake system also adds to the overall ride experience and always brought the scooter to a smooth stop even in panic braking.
- Headlight and tailgate light– these 2 are very bright for everyone around you to see and, therefore, add a degree of safety to the rides.
What I don’t like
- No phone mount– I didn’t have a lot of trouble pairing the scooter to the mobile App via Bluetooth. But having a phone mount on the handlebar would have made more sense. I can’t risk taking my hand off the handlebar to reach for the phone in my pocket for real-time riding stats.
- √Foldable for portability and storage
- √Very easy to use
- √Overall excellent construction quality
- √Reliable braking system
- √Lightweight
- ⊗Not so easy to pair it with the App
- ⊗Not the best speed and range
3. Razor E300S Seated Electric Scooter- Best Folding Electric Scooter for Teens
• Range: 40 minutes
• Battery: 2 12-volt batteries
• Charging time: 8 hours
• Maximum speed: 15 mph
• Weight: 52.2 pounds
• Max weight: 220 lbs
• Brake system: Hand-operated rear brake
• Wheels: 10″ Pneumatic
Next up is a really good recommendation for parents looking for the best folding electric scooters for kids. This scooter is available in 2 versions:
- the E300S
- and E300
These 2 are practically the same only that the E300S has a seat and pricier.
The Razor E300S has a very basic construction design but it looks very sturdy and seems like it could take some rough usage with ease.
This scooter has a weight capacity of 220 pounds and it’s quite small at 40″ by 40″ by 17″. This is what orients it to kids (over 8 years) and pre-teens.
It’s quite zippy, though, at 15 mph and doesn’t look so toy-ish and can, therefore, be used by most adults within this weight range.
It also has a super-size deck to accommodate adults’ feet comfortably both when sitting and standing.
The Razor E300S uses two 12-volt lead-acid batteries that are capable of powering the 250-watt motor for up to 40 minutes or roughly 10 miles.
Most scooters don’t always hit the manufacturer-claimed range, though. So, to be on the safer side, I would recommend targeting a total of 8 miles (to and fro).
The e300s is basically very straightforward to use for teens and small adults alike thanks to its single-speed mode, a twist grip acceleration control on the right, and a handbrake lever on the left.
The biggest issue that I have with this scooter is its 8-hour charge time compared to its range.
There’s an option to purchase another set of batteries and have one of them charging as you ride on the other one, though.
In addition, although its 10-inch pneumatic tires do absorb some light bumps, it can get really shaky on rough pavements since it does not have a suspension system.
- √Easy to use
- √Seemingly durable
- √Good speed
- √Sturdy pneumatic tires
- ⊗Long charging time
- ⊗No lights, reflectors, speedometer, or odometer
4. Segway Ninebot es2 Pro– Best Folding Electric Scooter for Commutes
• Range: 15 miles
• Battery: 36v 5.2Ah Lithium Ion
• Charging: 3.5 hours
• Motor: 300w (600w peak)
• Top speed: 15 mph
• Weight: 28 pounds
• Max Weight capacity: 220 lbs
• Wheels: 8-inch front, 7.5-inch rear
• Brakes: Electric and Regenerative front brake, step fender brake rear
A proud successor of the renowned Segway es1, the Ninebot ES2 is sleek, powerful, and hands down very irresistible.
This is what I would recommend for stylish workers who want to replace their daily driver with an office-appropriate affordable folding electric scooter.
It’s not the most provocative, though, but it will still catch some eyes.
Starting off with what matters most when buying an electric scooter, the Ninebot ES2 features a 300-watt front wheel hub motor with a peak power of 600 watts.
This motor is run by a 36-volt 5.2Ah Li-ion battery and can reach speeds of up to 15 mph.
- The limit speed mode that allows you to use the smartphone app to customize the speed limit to your preference and depending on the traffic.
- The normal speed mode that lets you reach the max speed.
- The speed mode that offers more power and greater acceleration at max speed.
The 36v battery promises a range of 15.5 miles per charge.
In case this isn’t enough for your long commutes, there’s an option to upgrade the battery pack and doing this will give you a good 28 miles per charge on perfect conditions.
This upgrade also boosts the motor’s peak watts to 800 watts thereby giving it a greater oomph when going uphill.
As far as safety is concerned, the Segway Ninebot ES2 should be used by riders 14 years and above and within its 220-pound weight capacity.
This is a dual-brake scooter with a regenerative front wheel brake that is controlled using the left throttle and foot-operated disc brake.
Together, these brakes should stop the scooter in utmost 4 meters. Moreover, it’s also equipped with a dual wheel suspension system.
Even with the full shock absorption system, note this scooter’s solid wheels are meant for urban pavements, streets, and pathways and not rocky off-roads.
- √Sleek design
- √Battery upgrade option
- √Seemingly quality construction
- √Lightweight
- √Speedy charging (3.5 hours)
- ⊗Fender brake is great but requires getting used
- ⊗Secondary battery pack is pricey
5. Qiewa Q1 Hummer – Best Foldable Electric Scooter for Range
• Motor: 800W
• Battery: 48v 25Ah Lithium-ion
• Weight: 55 lbs
• Max Weight capacity: 550 lbs
• Top speed: 35 mph
• Range: 65 miles
• Wheels: 10-inch pneumatic tires
• Brakes: dual-wheel disk brakes
• Extra features: LED lights, tailgate lights, side lights, suspension, IP6 waterproof
The Qiewa Q1 is the immediate competitor for the Nanrobot D4+ above.
These 2 are actually often compared since they tend to offer pretty much similar performance on almost all fronts; speed, range, comfort, and safety.
What keeps the Qiewa Q1 ahead of the competition, however, is its record-breaking 65-mile range.
Although its 48v 25Ah lithium-ion battery does take a long time to charge to full capacity (8-12 hours), its range means that you can ride on it for a full day and then charge it overnight.
This folding electric scooter is powered by an 800-watt motor that offers speeds of up to 35 mph.
It’s slightly slower than the Nanorobot D4+ but I doubt you’ll realize it since this is still a seriously high speed for a scooter.
The Qiewa Q1 is meant for smooth city pavement and bicycle lanes but it’s also tough enough for off-road trails as its 10-inch pneumatic, 6-spring full suspension system, dual wheel disc braking system, and ability to conquer 35-degree inclinations suggest.
Compared to electric scooters that weigh over 100 pounds, the Q1 is relatively lightweight at 55 pounds.
In addition, its high weight capacity of 550 pounds makes it a great option for the entire family.
Other features worth of mention here include an intuitive control panel with an LCD screen that displays running speed, distance covered, and available battery power, Anti-theft remote key fob, and a safety lighting system with headlight, tailgate lights, and sidelights.
- √Longest range
- √High speed
- √Solid construction
- √Heavy-duty suspension system
- √Reliable customer support
- ⊗Pricey

• Brake system: Front and Rear Disc Braking System

The Nanrobot D5+ is more or less a revamped version of the D4+ and it’s meant for people who want more range, and much lower charge time. This one charges in 3 hours!
With the ability to cruise at 40 mph, this model is a regular contender in collections of the fastest foldable electric scooters for adults and kids.
And its 50-mile range per charge coupled with the nicely padded seat is just an assurance that you can rely on it for your daily commutes.
This scooter’s performance in speed and range is made possible by its dual motor design that delivers a total wattage of 2000 watts.
Interestingly, you can choose between single and dual motor modes depending on your speed needs and terrain.
And you can also engage turbo to conquer inclines of up to 35 degrees with ease.
Your safety is well taken care of too. This scooter’s dual wheel disc brake system is hand-operated to give you total control of the scooter at any given time.
The 10-inch pneumatic wheels, on the other hand, coupled with the full suspension system and an all-wheel drive technology technically glues the D5+ to the pavement and trails by flattening out all road imbalances.
Lastly, should you get late from work, this folding electric scooter has a headlamp and tailgate light, as well as side lights for increased visibility.
- √Impressively long range
- √Hand operated dual wheel disc brake system
- √Stable
- √Powerful motors for hilly areas
- ⊗Notably heavy
- ⊗Quite expensive

It uses a 250w brushless DC motor that propels it at a maximum speed of 15.5 mph.
It might be a little bit slower when going uphill, though, and especially if you are closer to its 220-pound weight capacity.
This adult lightweight e-scooter uses a 36v lithium-ion battery, and true to manufacturer claims, I have been able to hit 12 miles (on conservative rides) and 9 miles (on rough rides).
Although this range is quite short if you were to compare it with other scooters 3 times pricey, the good news is that this scooter’s 8.5-inch wheels keep it closer to the ground.
So, you can easily propel it home with some kicks.
The Gotrax GXL has several convenience features that you’d not expect for a scooter at its price range:

The Megawheels is yet another well-balanced scooter with a good bang for your buck in the affordable price range.
This sleek and inexpensive adult folding electric scooter is powered by a 250-watt that gives it a good amount of oomph when building speed.
The Megawheels isn’t a speed demon at its 15.5 mph top speed. But most people still find this speed sufficient and safe for their daily commutes.
If you are a heavy rider and too close to its manufacturer recommended weight limit of 264 pounds, you might experience a significant decline in speed more so when going up steep hills.
But you should be able to climb most urban ascents easily if you are willing to supplement the motor with a few kicks.
This scooter uses a 5800mAh LG lithium battery with a claimed range of 13.6 miles.
This range is possible if you ride on gear 1 with a maximum speed of 11 mph, on flat terrains, and avoid making frequent stops.
You could also get over the range anxiety by carrying an extra charger so you can top up the battery at your destination before making the return trip.
The best part about this battery is that it recharges to full capacity in 3-4 hours. There’s a LED battery indicator to keep you posted on battery level.
The wheels are 8.5-inch in diameter and they are air-filled to provide cushion when rolling over potholes and other obstacles.
The front wheel is fitted with a functional electronic brake and backed by a much stronger rear disc brake.
The Megawheels have a bright headlamp and a brake light that flashes when you engage the brakes. It’s quite lightweight too at 27.5 pounds.

This is a stylish machine that utilizes dual motors that output a combined power of around 1000 watts. This wattage promises a top speed of 25+ mph on turbo.
There’s also an eco-mode that uses a single motor mode, though, to offer a maximum speed of 20 mph which I still find fast for a scooter.
The Widewheel uses a 48-volt battery that offers a punchy range of 15 miles on dual motor mode and well over 20 miles on a single motor.
If you reside in a city blessed with lots of fairly steep and sustained hills (San Francisco, for instance), this scooter’s torque is just what you need.

But this is what makes the Cho the top lightweight folding electric scooter for kids 2019.
As you’ll soon find out, this scooter is perhaps the easiest way to wean your kiddos off the screen and gaming consoles while still keeping them mentally and physically active.
The Cho is designed to be a perfect starter option for young riders below 110 lbs in weight, and who want a little more thrill than what a traditional kick scooter offers.

It’s also capable of climbing up to 5-degree inclinations.

I wouldn’t say that this scooter is any cheap at over a grand, but a glance at its specs sheet is enough to show you the value you are paying for.

What to Look for in a Folding Electric Scooter
Well, I understand it’s not an easy task to choose the best folding electric scooter boils down to your preference and budget.
There’re a million questions came to you when making the decision.
Will you be taking the scooter off-road?
How portable would you want it to be?
Do you intend to take it on public transport?
How far would you want the battery to last you?
……
In the following part, you will find answers to most of these questions.
Portability
If you plan to use the electric scooter for commuting, then portability is an issue that you need to give serious consideration.
Here, you not only need a foldable scooter, but it also needs to be compact so it can get into buses, trains, and trams breezily without being a bother to other passengers.
In addition, consider its weight and any other additional features that are intended to make portability easy such as compact handles.
Riding style and comfort
Comfort is of great essence in electric scooters and it all depends on the riding style.
Standard electric kick scooters that have a footboard onto which offer the least comfort levels but they are the most convenient especially in terms of foldability and portability.
If you’d like a little bit more comfort, a scooter with a seat might be what you need.
These models come in all designs from those that feature a removable seat to others where the seat is permanently fixated.
Weight capacity
While we are here, you also need to think of its maximum weight capacity.
Most affordable foldable electric scooters for kids and adults will accommodate weights of up to 200 lbs.
But there are others that can withstand weights of up to 500 lbs.
But these tend to come at a higher price tag.
Performance
Performance in foldable electric scooters mainly encompasses these 3 aspects:
- range,
- speed,
- and charging time.
Whether you want the scooter for commuting or for pure fun when you are free, a good range is a great thing to have.
Range varies greatly between brands with some offering as low as 9 miles per charge and others hauling azz for up to 60 miles between charges.
Speed mainly depends on what you intend to use the scooter for. If you want it for fun, a super-fast model might interest you.
On the other hand, if you wish to use it for commutes, you want a good balance of speed, range, and portability.
The time that the scooter takes to charge is very important too.
I know of models that take up to 12 hours to charge fully while others require 1.5 hours only.
Budget
Generally, you should get a good foldable electric scooter for adults at around 500 dollars.
As you near the 1 grand mark, you’ll be looking at some of the best scooters around with a higher speed and range.
At over $2000, you enter a completely different spectrum with the best of everything:
- sleek design,
- speed,
- range,
- long-lasting batteries,
- fast charging speeds,
- high-end full suspension,
- and braking systems.
The Bottom Line
The best folding electric scooter makes a great alternative for commuting short distances.
It’s a green and convenient travel option especially if you live in a city that is cursed with traffic and few parking spaces.
As we’ve just seen in these folding electric scooter reviews, scooters are not only great for mobility, they are also perfect fun tools and can offer enough thrill for the entire family.
So, what’s your pick for the best folding electric scooter?
